Requirements

Licensure Requirements in the U.S. Virgin Islands – In compliance with the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands Executive Order Number 233-1979, a U.S. Virgin Islands Emergency Medical Technician License will be granted to a person who:

• Is Registered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians in Columbus, Ohio.
• Has completed an approved four (4) year high school course of study or the equivalent,
• Is able to lift and carry one hundred (100) pounds,
• Has a valid Virgin Islands Drivers License,
• Has successfully completed the Emergency Defensive and Evasive Driving Course,
• Has submitted written evidence, verified by oath, of good character and good physical and behavioral health,
• Has submitted 3 character references including a letter of recommendation from previous employer if applicable.  

License Application

A USVI License to practice as an Emergency Medical Technician is issued by the VI Department of Health after an application has been completed and submitted to the Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Re-Certification Requirements in the U.S. Virgin Islands:

• All U.S.V.I. licensed EMTs must submit evidence of a physical examination, conducted by a physician licensed to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. Virgin Islands, certifying that the EMT is in good health.
• Maintain National Registry certification.
• All U.S.V.I. licensed EMTs must complete and submit proof of current certification in cardiopulmonary Resuscitation /Basic Cardiac Life Support, according to current American Heart Association standards.
• U.S.V.I. licensed EMT-I, EMT-C, and Paramedics must complete biennial Medication In-Service training.
• Re-Certification Requirements in the U.S. Virgin Islands
• U.S.V.I. licensed EMT-I, EMT-C, and Paramedics must complete biennial Advanced Airway Support skills verification.
• U.S.V.I. licensed EMT-C and Paramedics must maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification according to American Heart Association standards.
• It is the responsibility of each U.S.V.I. EMT to maintain all current required certifications to remain eligible for continued licensure and continued employment in the Division of Emergency Medical Services, Department of Health.
• All EMTs must submit proof of a valid Virgin Islands Driver’s License.
