The Government of the United States Virgin Islands Department of Health provides emergency care and transport of the sick and injured through its Office of Emergency Medical Services (VIEMS). VIEMS was created in 1976 and is tasked with many other responsibilities, including public safety, highway safety, rescue response, health & environmental monitoring, community outreach and EMS for children. VIEMS operates on the Islands of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas. It also provides EMS to the surrounding cays and waterways via ground and sea transport vehicles.
Services
Emergency Care & Transport
VIEMS employs Nationally Registered EMTs at all provider levels Paramedic, Advanced EMT, and EMT. Our transport fleet includes Type 1, Type 3 Ambulances and a custom designed Ambulance Boat.
Licensure
The Office of Emergency Medical Services and the Commissioner of the VI Dept. of Health. Provide licensure for practice to all EMTs of the Virgin Islands Territory in all occupational settings.
Training and Education
VIEMS Training Institutes on St. Thomas and St. Croix provide training in 1st Aid, CPR, Emergency Medical Care and many other courses for its employees and the general public. It also serves as the outreach for community education on EMS operations.
