USVI Healthcare Providers Encouraged to Apply for National Health Service Corps Site Designation

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – The VI Department of Health is encouraging the territory’s healthcare providers in the territory to apply for National Health Service Corps (NHSC) site designation. The application period is open; however, it will close on June 17, 2025.

“Becoming an NHSC site opens the door to critical resources, talented professionals, and long-term improvements in patient care,” said Justa Encarnacion, VI Health Commissioner. “We strongly encourage our local healthcare providers to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Eligible facilities include those offering primary care, dental services, or behavioral and mental health support. In addition to meeting NHSC site eligibility criteria, these sites typically serve populations located in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) such as the US Virgin Islands.

NHSC sites play a vital role in expanding access to health care by hosting licensed clinicians who receive student loan repayment in exchange for serving in medically underserved areas. The program offers an effective way for local clinics and health centers to recruit and retain qualified providers committed to community care.

NHSC Site designation offers several benefits including national recognition through inclusion in the NHSC site directory and workforce support by attracting highly qualified clinicians through loan repayment incentives. The recognition also improves community access to health care in high-need areas and inspires more young providers.

Dr. Tai Hunte-Ceasar, Chief Medical Officer for the VI Department of Health, added that, “we want more of our local clinics and community health partners to benefit from programs like NHSC that bring quality care to those who need it most. By becoming a designated site, you’re not just strengthening your workforce — you’re investing in a healthier Virgin Islands.”
