DOH to Reopen WIC Clinic on the West End of St. Croix Ribbon Cutting to be Held
After having to close the Women, Infants and Child (WIC) Clinic on the west end of St. Croix 11 years ago (2006), the USVI Department of Health (DOH) is extremely happy to announce the official reopening of WIC services in Frederiksted Town. On Monday, May 8, 2017 (10am-11am) the DOH will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly renovated location in Frederiksted.
WIC participants who reside on the west of St. Croix now have the convenience of obtaining their recertification, check pick appointments and all other services at the clinic in Frederiksted, during their regularly scheduled appointment dates. Those who attend the ribbon cutting ceremony will get a tour of the newly renovated facility and light refreshments will be available. The DOH invites the public, all elected officials, other government/private agencies and the media.
WIC is a premiere child nutrition preventive health program, federally funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered territorially by the USVI Department of Health. The following services are provided to pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children up to 5 years: checks for healthy foods, nutrition and breastfeeding counseling. These services are geared to improve health outcomes and referrals to other health and social services. Research has shown that babies born to WIC mothers have a lower incidence of prematurity and low birth rate and lower rated of childhood anemia than those of similar backgrounds who do not participate in WIC. To be eligible, participants must have a nutrition or health risk, meet income guidelines and live within the U.S. Virgin Islands.
