DOH to Host Walkability Town Hall Meeting on St. Croix
The USVI Department of Health (DOH), in partnership with other public and private agencies, will hold a Town Hall Meeting on St. Croix, Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the DC Canegata Multi-Recreational Center.
The DOH previously held Town Hall meetings on St. John, Wednesday, August 9th and on St. Thomas, Friday, June 30th. The purpose of the Town Hall meetings is to get the community’s ideas on areas that can be improved/constructed to promote more physical activity in the territory. The roundabout on St. John and the surrounding area was identified as one of the first projects to be improved on that island; the area behind the Schneider Regional Medical Center, on St. Thomas, was also identified and plans are being created to make it more suitable for the public’s use. These Town Hall meetings stem from a Walkability Institute that the DOH’s Chronic Disease Prevention program held, in collaboration with CDC and the Task Force for Global Health (TEPHINET), June 13-14, 2017, on St. Croix. During the Institute a diverse group of stakeholders convened to discuss and develop a plan of action for making our streets more conducive for walking/biking/running. The Walkability team has been hosting Town Hall meetings to share the information learned during the workshop and discuss first action steps. Being the last of the Town Hall meetings on this subject, we are requesting the St. Croix community joins us in designing an island that promotes safety and encourages physical activity.
