DOH to Celebrate EMS Week May 21-27, 2017
National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week (http://www.emsstrong.org/), May 21-27, 2017, is the perfect time to honor our local EMS professionals and promote awareness of their everyday service to the public. This year’s theme, EMS Strong, recognizes our EMS staff’s constant service to the community as first responders to healthcare in the territory. “For many, EMS is the first contact they have when experiencing a medical emergency and the Department of Health is proud to have such passionate, dedicated, and highly experienced individuals on our team. Their work ethic and commitment to providing quality care to every patient they encounter is demonstrated every day. The DOH’s EMS division is nationally recognized and equally qualified and on the same level as EMTs nationwide. They utilize national standards to perform their duties, to include the National Emergency Medical Services Information System V3 (NEMSIS). The Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) have also met the new National Registry Transition Guidelines, which means the EMTs are certified to offer more pre-hospital care.
Governor Kenneth E. Mapp stated, “Emergency medical services is a vital public service. Access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury. The EMTs perform lifesaving work and it is appropriate to recognize the value and the accomplishments of our Emergency Medical service providers by designating May 21-27th Emergency Medical Service Week.”
