Despite Electrical Issues
STX DOH Still Providing Services
(October 18, 2017, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI)) During an inspection of the Charles Harwood Complex’s (CHC) transfer switch on St. Croix, yesterday, Tuesday, October 17, 2017, an explosion occurred, causing power failure to the building. As a result, there is currently no electricity at the CHC. An individual conducting the inspection experienced severe burn injuries. No Department of Health staff was injured. An investigation of the incident is underway; once the investigation is completed the transfer switch will be repaired.
Although there is no electricity at the DOH’s Christiansted location, the DOH staff is still providing services from 10am-3pm today. The following is a list of services that continue on St. Croix at the CHC:
- Maternal & Child Health is seeing all prenatal clients and distributing Infant & Toddler Kits (10:00am-3:00pm)
- WIC-distributing September and October checks (10:00am-3:00pm)
- Community Health-providing clinical care and prescription refills (10:00am-3:00pm)
- Vital Statistics-giving out birth and death certificates (11:30am-3:00pm)
- Family Planning-pick up your supplies and get your clinical exams (10:00am-3:00pm)
Additionally, the Communicable Disease Program is providing HIV/STD testing today at Whim Gardens, 10am-3pm. Individuals who are tested for the first time will be eligible for a $10/$15 gas or food coupon.
Also, the Immunization Program will be distributing free Insulin and giving free Tetanus and Flu shots today, 10:00am-3:00pm, in the lobby of the Juan F. Luis Hospital.
On Friday, October 20th, DOH will provide all clinical services during an outreach at Plaza Extra West.
