Commissioner Davis Announces Medical Director Appointment
Commissioner Michelle S. Davis, PhD, is happy to announce the appointment of Tai Camille Hunte- Ceasar, MD, as the Department of Health’s (DOH) Medical Director.
Dr. Hunte-Ceasar, born and raised on St. Thomas, attended Kirwin Terrace Elementary and Addelita Cancryn Junior High School prior to graduating from Charlotte Amalie High School in 1997. She subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree and a Medical Degree at Howard University in Washington, DC. After medical school, she completed an Internal Medicine residency program and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Jackson Memorial Hospital at the University of Miami (UM). During residency, Dr. Hunte-Ceasar joined the Jay Weiss Residency for Global Health Equity, which integrated global health and Internal Medicine training. As a Jay Weiss resident, she obtained a Masters of Science Degree in Public Health at UM and completed international electives in countries in the Caribbean, South America, and in South Africa.
Having a desire to put her medical skills to use at “home,” Dr. Hunte-Ceasar returned to St. Thomas in 2011 to work in the public and private sectors. She is certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine for Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and has served as the DOH’s Territorial Infectious Diseases physician and the Medical Director for the Communicable Diseases Division (CDD) Clinic, for six years (October 2011-May 2017), providing HIV/STD/TB care. In addition to her new role as the Medical Director, Dr. Hunte-Ceasar will continue to be a provider at the DOH’s CDD clinic. Dr. Hunte-Ceasar is also the Chairwoman for the Infection Control Department and provides Infectious Diseases consultations at the Schneider Regional Medical Center (SRMC). Previously, she served as the Chief of Medicine at SRMC from January 2015 to May 2017. Dr. Hunte-Ceasar is a staff member of the AIDS Education Training Center, in which she provides HIV/AIDS education to local clinicians in the Virgin Islands. Upon returning to St. Thomas, she married a local pharmacy owner, and they have one daughter.
The DOH family welcomes Dr. Hunte-Ceasar to her new role.
