The VI Department of Health has received notification from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that federal funding associated with the COVID-19 response and the American Rescue Plan Act is being withdrawn.
The total reduction amounts to $3,312,444, affecting 12 staff positions across key public health programs.
Of the 12 impacted positions, four are within the Department’s Behavioral Health Division, including one case manager, two behavioral health therapists, and one psychiatrist. In anticipation of potential federal funding adjustments, we proactively secured alternate grant funding to preserve these positions. As a result, there will be no disruption to behavioral health services in the Virgin Islands. The community will continue to have full access to the support and care provided by our behavioral health team.
The total financial impact to this division is $751,336.
The remaining $2,561,108 is being withdrawn from the Department’s Immunization Program, impacting eight staff positions, including a licensed practical nurse and community health workers. These personnel were integral to our plans to transition the Health Disparities Team into broader efforts to increase the territory’s vaccination rate.
This funding loss is particularly concerning given recent measles outbreaks on the U.S. mainland, underscoring the ongoing need for strong public health infrastructure.
Despite this challenge, the VI Department of Health remains committed to its mission. We are actively exploring alternative funding sources to support immunization outreach and maintain momentum in protecting the health of USVI residents.
Our team remains resilient, and we will continue to deliver essential services with the highest level of care and dedication.
