The USVI Department of Health’s Women, Infants and Children’s (WIC) Program, joins the National Nutrition Month campaign; it’s a campaign that focuses attention on making informed food choices which in turn promotes good health. As a premier child nutrition program that promotes good nutrition as a method to maintain good health, the WIC division is having nutrition activities within its clinics such as:
1. On Wednesday, March 15th (10:00am-12:00pm) the St. Croix WIC program will host a How to Put Your Best Vegetable Fork Forward presentation. It will consist of food demonstrations - in which those in attendance will get a chance to taste various dishes made from vegetables such as Zucchini Fritters, Carrot Pie, Spinach Casserole-and a game where participants will guess the sugar content in specified foods. Winners will receive prizes.
2. On Thursday, March 16th and Monday, March 27th (1:00pm-3:00pm), the St. Thomas WIC program will be hosting Personal Shopper Activities at Plaza Extra (Tutu Park Mall) and Pueblo (Long Bay) grocery stores- respectively. Participants will learn how to choose/shop for the healthiest foods, to include reading food labels, and brief in store food demonstrations using vegetables. WIC Clients are encouraged to bring their WIC checks and shop along with the DOH WIC staff. A WIC nutritionist will also be on-hand to assist in the healthy shopping experience and will provide recipes.
