DOH’s Annual World Aids Day Candle Light Vigil & Reception Well-Received

The World Aids Day Candlelight Vigil, held on Thursday, December 1st, a success in both districts. The Department of Health held simultaneous events on St. Croix and St. Thomas. 

On St. Thomas the Candlelight Vigil and reception was held from 6:00pm-7:00pm, at the Emancipation Garden's Bandstand. The program on St. Thomas concluded with the releasing of balloons into the air in remembrance of those who have died as a result of HIV/AIDS.

On St. Croix the event started with a march from Basin Triangle to the Christiansted Fort. Governor Mapp participated in the march through downtown Christiansted.  During the Candlelight program Commissioner of Health, Michelle Davis, PhD, provided a history of HIV/AIDS cases in the territory from 1981 to 2014 and mentioned the improved services that the department has been able to provide those patients in the territory. 

Governor Mapp also shared remarks emphasizing that "individuals living with HIV/AIDS do not have a death sentence and that no one should be stigmatized who is afflicted." The program concluded with rose petals being thrown into the water in remembrance of those who have died as a result of the disease. A Meet & Greet reception was followed with light refreshments and conversation.
