On Saturday, August 20th the Department of Health (DOH) was ready to serve the St. Croix community, providing free immunizations and Back-to School items, including book bags, lunch kits, portfolio binders, pencils, crayons, sketch books, umbrellas, flasks, piggybanks etc.) to school aged children, K-12th. The event took place at the Sunny Isle Shopping Center, in which immunization services were conducted on the DOH Medical Clinic van from 1pm until after 4pm.
Almost 20 of the DOH staff were present and active in assisting with the event. Of the 93 children seen, 32 were given vaccinations; some received multiple shots. The latter children’s immunization records were reviewed and parents received immunization clearance slips, further assisting them with the completing of their back to school process/requirements. Over 1000 free Back-to-School items were distributed to families who were present.
Several parents expressed their appreciation to the Commissioner of Health, Michelle S. Davis, PhD, noting the benefit of the central location, the convenient time and day of the immunization service being provided and the school materials that were being handed out.
